Ruben Celani

Ruben Celani is a PhD student in the department of Literary Studies at Ghent University. In 2016 he graduated in Archival Science and Librarianship at ‘La Sapienza’ University in Rome, with an MA dissertation about popular medicine and technical arts in a late 16th century manuscript, whose analysis mainly involved Palaeography, Philology, Codicology and History of the Italian language.

Celani is currently working with prof. Teodoro Katinis on the interactions between practical medicine, rhetoric and choice of vernacular in Italian ‘books of secrets’, a divulgative genre which became very popular in early modern Europe. His goal is to determine what role rhetorical strategies had in the success of these texts, and in what measure they contributed to the dissemination of medical knowledge in vernacular.
